SYNOPSIS
This title is a nice mixture between various familiar gameplay-elements. The graphics are great, the sounds and the music are professionally done. To be honest, I can give you no reason NOT to download the game...
STORY
The story is very puzzle-friven, that is the story follows the puzzles, not vice versa. In one word, the story is not important. At all.
GAMEPLAY
Red Valkyrie is a top down shooter with easy puzzle elements. You steer a small spaceship through what looks like a sci-fi dungeon in outer space. The controls are asteroids-like with additional aiming with your mouse, that is you accelerate in the direction your mouse is pointing and this vector is added to your actual moving-vector.
This is a mean of transportation you'll have to get used to. Particularly because you are not alone in this dungeon. Turrets, different kinds of enemy ships and drones, traps and monster-generators will try to hinder you to accomplish your mission. Fortunatly by pressing your left mousebutton you have an effective mean of getting rid of them.
During play, you will improve your weapon, get new ones and use various gadgets you'll find on your way.
COMMENT
Red Valkyrie combines gameplay-elements from various classic genres. First, there's asteroids for the steering, then there's the dungeon crawling concerning the environment and the puzzles. Finally there's a bit of the good old shooter-genre. the result is a most entertaining and challenging freeware title which deserves all your attention.
The graphics are 3 dimensional and the levels nicely designed. The models of both enemies and turrets fit the atmosphere of the game greatly. The lightning effects are nicely done. All in all this title surely has professional qualities and could easily be sold as a shareware title. Fortunatly it isn't and by that can be added to the Runtime-Review-Section with a clear conscience.
A great addition to the freeware-scene.
