Dark Oberon is a solid programmed RTS-game with unique grafics. Unique they are, because everything you see was modeled with plasticine, photographed and then implemented as sprites.

SYNOPSIS
6 Students have realized a quite ingenious RTS game. While the gameplay does not differ from "genre-brothers", the gfx are very special - and very beautiful. Dark Oberon is a rough diamond among the freeware strategy-games, which could with some additional effort become a true gem in its genre...
STORY
Unfortunatly there is no story. There isn't even a single player mode, which really would improve this title. Dark Oberon is what you would call a RTS-Deathmatch game. Two parties on a quite small map fighting each other. Same units on both sides, there is only one "race" - the human race.
GAMEPLAY
The gameplay is pretty much like you know it from other RTS-games: Build, collect, build, train, collect, fight, fight, fight! You normally start with a small homebase or even without that, only with some peasants. The resources that are being collected during the game are wood and gold, food is being automatically added when you construct a farm. The homebase can be upgraded to bigger and stronger buildings, as can the tower and the workshop. Your only units are: peasants, knights, catapults and zeppelins. The commands are as we know and like it: Left click select unit, right click to order, either walk or build or attack. The units use some kind of pathfinding, which sometimes can lead to "searching" a path by: walking, realizing that there's no way this way, walking back, choosing another way. As long as you never have been on a piece of terrain, it stays dark and you don't know what will be there. Anyway, apart from an enemy unit there's nothing to be afraid of: The only "wild beast" in Dark Oberon is a swine, which in the end is not a real danger... strictly speaking no danger at all. But you can kill it.
COMMENT
Dark Oberon is perfect in many points. And also imperfect in a few other. Perfect are the graphics - they are one of the reasons why I added Dark Oberon to the Review-section. Why? Well, because I would call them "art" ;-) The game was done by 6 students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University, Prague. They modeled everything what you can see in the game out of plasticine, took a picture of the item and integrated it as sprite in the game. The resulting look is awsome. There even are animations to be seen, the soldier walking cycle for example. Also perfect is the music, which is dreamy and adds a warm and fairy-like atmosphere to the game. It perfectly stays in the background, and it really is not getting on anyones nerves, even after playing the game for a longer time. Perfect is the programming, everything works great; the pathfinding could be enhanced, but it doesn't really disturb the overall impression, that the developers knew what they were doing. The menu is great, easy to understand and its sounds again are funny and original - just listen closely ;-) Imperfect is the game concerning a real single-player story mode and of course in the number of buildings and units. If they would keep on working on the game, I first would add some more units, then add some more buildings, then add more maps and after that develope a second race. In the case of Dark Oberon that would mean: A bit of coding, and much work in generating the sprites, as everything would have to be modeled again with plasticine. BUT if they'd take the effort, Dark Oberon easily could become one of my favourite RTS games. So there only rests the hope that someday they will continue working on this game and until then I every once in a while will play this game for about half an hour, just to enjoy the nice gfx, and loose myself in a medieval fairy-land made out of plasticine...
