...over the top gameplay, great gfx, excellent effects and a nice score combine to a worthwhile 'musical' game of its own.

SYNOPSIS
Synaesthete is a felicitous mixture of Shoot 'Em 'ups and Frets on Fire. Maybe you know REZ? Feel the beat and blast your enemies away.
STORY
This is an abstract music-game. It has no story, although I'd liked to hear one which explaines all this weird... thingys... err...
GAMEPLAY
You probably heared about guitar heroe or a similar game. If not, just type in guiter heroe in YOUTUBE and you'll find a bunch of videos of quite young, mostly male members of the human species holding a plastic guitar without strings but with colored buttons, standing in front of a TV and pressing these buttons with incredible speed. As a alternative, you could download Frets on Fire, a game also reviewed here. Anyway, what I wanted to say is that this game has elements of guitar heroe combined with a shoot 'em 'up, which is, as I realized, quite entertaining. You steer a white little polygonal fellow in a musical environment populated by abstract looking evil... thingys. Obviously, you have to shoot them. But if you search for a button to be pressed and hold for conitnous firing will be dissappointed: Istead, there are three buttons, each of them has to be pressed in the correct rhythm to the music. Only when you press the right button at the correct time, the little white fellow will shoot the evil ones. While shooting and concentrating on tzhe beats, you will simultaniously dodge the enemies. In addition to your shooting you will use magical spells which help you gain health, gain more points or just to destroy your opponents faster.
COMMENT
Synaesthesia maens the combination of two or more senses (smelling, tasting, feeling, hearing, seeing), while one sense affects the other. For example, there are musicians, which (when their eyes are closed) SEE a colour when they hear a certain tone. In Synaestete the combination of hearing the music and shooting your opponents (which actually isn't a human sense, although it makes sense [Harhar]) was the reason for naming the game 'Synaethete'. The gameidea not unique, but extremely well carried out. The animations and specialFX are great, the overall look of the game is perfect and I really enjoyed the action. The music, of course is a matter of taste, but it fits the game quite well. In addition to that, the game is really a full feature, often freeware titles have just three/four/five levels. This one will keep you playing for while. If you have some musical feeling and like unusual games, this title surely will entertain you.

Addictive!!! Written by Zerahl on 2008-04-07 18:18:51 This game is one of the best rythm based games I have ever played. I have finished it multiple times but still go back for the catchy tunes. If you're a fan of Stepmania or even Frets on Fire, this is a must try. |
